Gardeners Eden Park is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We aim to prevent accidents, protect health and minimise risks across all projects, from small residential gardens to larger commercial and communal outdoor spaces.

Policy Statement and Objectives

The objective of this Health and Safety policy is to ensure that all work carried out by Gardeners Eden Park is planned, managed and monitored so that risks are identified and controlled as far as reasonably practicable. Health and safety is an integral part of our day-to-day gardening operations, not an add-on. We expect everyone working on behalf of the company to take personal responsibility for complying with this policy.

Our specific aims are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with relevant health and safety legislation, provide safe systems of work, and promote a positive safety culture within the company and on every site where we operate.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Gardeners Eden Park is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that suitable resources, training and supervision are provided. This includes assessing the risks associated with our gardening services, maintaining appropriate equipment and ensuring that safe working procedures are understood and followed.

Management will review and update risk assessments, method statements and safety procedures to reflect changes in legislation, working practices, equipment, and client requirements. This review will take place at regular intervals and whenever significant changes occur.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees, whether permanent, temporary or subcontracted, must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must cooperate with management in implementing this policy and follow all safety instructions, training and procedures provided.

Employees are expected to use any personal protective equipment issued to them, to operate machinery and tools only when trained and authorised to do so, and to report any hazards, defects, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions to their supervisor without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before starting gardening works, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards, such as uneven ground, overhead obstructions, sharp tools, powered machinery, manual handling tasks, noise, dust, chemicals, and interaction with the public or traffic. The findings of these assessments will be used to develop safe systems of work for each task.

Where necessary, site-specific assessments will be completed to reflect particular features of the garden or outdoor space, including access routes, slopes, water features, confined areas and any known underground or overhead services. Controls may include exclusion zones, barriers, clear signage, traffic management and scheduling work to reduce risks to clients and visitors.

Training, Competence and Supervision

Gardeners Eden Park will ensure that all staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles. This may include training in manual handling, safe use of powered gardening equipment, use of personal protective equipment, safe storage and application of garden chemicals, and emergency procedures.

Only competent and authorised personnel may operate specialised equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and powered cultivation tools. Supervision will be provided where needed to ensure that less experienced staff work safely and develop the skills and attitudes required to maintain high safety standards.

Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment

All tools, machinery and equipment used by Gardeners Eden Park will be suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at regular intervals. Defective or damaged equipment must be taken out of service immediately and reported for repair or replacement.

Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include protective footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate workwear. Staff must use this equipment as instructed and store it correctly when not in use.

Chemical Use and Environmental Protection

Where garden chemicals such as fertilisers, weed control products or treatments are used, they will be selected, stored, transported, and applied in accordance with manufacturer guidance and applicable regulations. Safety data information will be consulted and control measures will be put in place to protect staff, clients, pets, wildlife and the wider environment.

We aim to minimise the use of chemical products wherever reasonably practicable and promote environmentally responsible gardening practices. Waste materials, including green waste, packaging and used containers, will be handled and disposed of safely and responsibly.

Working Conditions, Welfare and Public Safety

Gardeners Eden Park recognises the demands of outdoor work and will take reasonable steps to protect staff from risks associated with weather conditions, sun exposure, cold, and dehydration. Breaks, suitable clothing and access to drinking water will be encouraged as part of safe working practice.

When working in public or shared spaces, care will be taken to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and passers-by from harm. Tools and equipment will not be left unattended in ways that may cause injury, work areas will be kept as clear and tidy as possible, and noise or disruption will be managed responsibly.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported promptly so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve safety measures. First aid supplies will be available and staff will be informed of the procedure to follow in the event of an injury or emergency.

Emergency arrangements will be communicated to staff before work begins on a new site, including access points for emergency services, assembly points and any specific risks identified in the risk assessment.

Monitoring, Review and Policy Communication

Gardeners Eden Park will monitor compliance with this Health and Safety policy through supervision, inspections and feedback from staff and clients. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective actions will be taken and shared with the team.

This policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, equipment or legislation. The most current version of the policy will be made available to all employees and to clients on request, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to safe, professional gardening services.
